My Thoughts
I claim that I'm not really one for the alpha-male hero, but with characters like Jake Sharp, I'm beginning to reconsider. I'm not going to lie, I loved his take charge, protective role. He is intense and haunted, and like Camille, I was willing to take the time and have some patience as he dealt with his past and find out just who this man was underneath his rough and tough exterior.
THE PROTECTOR is full of heat and passion and oh-so-steamy sexytimes. There was a lot of anticipation with MANY "explosive" rewards and I enjoyed all of that, but I wanted more of the suspense and danger that I expected to get.
In addition to the romance, I love stories that include the best friend side-kick, and Camille had that in her BFF Heather. She doesn't play a major role in story, but her appearances are scene-stealing. One of my favorite moments is the reenactment of a famous scene from "Dirty Dancing", because I got to see the silliness of their friendship, and the youthfulness of Camille.
A moment that claimed my heart:
"Look at me."
I reluctantly open my eyes, finding Jake's dark gaze soft and reassuring. It only serves to make me feel worse, because he understands me so well.
. . . .
"I see you."
His sincerity can't be mistaken for anything less than that. I hear it, I feel it. (pg. 217)
Another thing that I liked about THE PROTECTOR is that the image from the book cover is incorporated in a scene in the book - a very important, pivotal scene. I loved having that image to refer to and the added dramatic effect it had on the story.
While THE PROTECTOR is the first book that I've read by Jodi Ellen Malpas, I'm sure to seek out more books by her. I hear she has a habit of writing about alpha male protagonists, and if they are anything like Jake Sharp, this could be a good thing.
